How We Work

From the Decision to the Right Opportunity.

Strategic guidance for established wealth teams and advisors evaluating a consequential change—before choosing a destination.

A successful firm relationship starts with understanding the advisor or team.

We listen to what you are looking for, what is working today and what needs to change. We consider your professional goals, partner priorities, client needs and the kind of people and culture you want around you.

We then draw on direct relationships with the firms we represent to identify suitable introductions. Jacqueline's former-CFO perspective helps you evaluate the financial implications alongside the personal and practical fit.

01

Understand the Enterprise

The outcome: Clear objectives and criteria for deciding whether a change is worthwhile.

Before making introductions, we take time to understand you and your business.

That includes your current economics, professional goals, partner priorities, client needs and expectations of a firm. We want to understand the support, leadership, culture and working relationships that would make a meaningful difference.

The objective is to establish what a suitable firm must deliver—financially, professionally and personally.

What We Consider

  • Current economics and operating structure
  • Ownership and equity
  • Partner and owner priorities
  • Growth objectives
  • Succession considerations
  • Platform and custodial capabilities
  • Enterprise value and long-term objectives
  • Culture and leadership
  • Team support and working relationships
  • Client-service requirements
02

Identify Opportunities

The outcome: Relevant alternatives with a clear reason each deserves consideration.

Essence Group represents a broad cross-section of wealth-management firms, with a direct relationship with each firm we represent.

We use that knowledge to identify firms whose business model, capabilities, people and economics align with your priorities, then facilitate introductions so you can evaluate the fit directly.

Our relationships provide access. Your needs guide which firms deserve consideration.

What We Consider

  • Strategic fit
  • Economics and compensation structures
  • Ownership opportunities
  • Platform capabilities
  • Custodial arrangements
  • Growth support
  • Succession and liquidity options
03

Evaluate Alternatives

The outcome: A comparison of economic and strategic trade-offs against the business you have today.

An attractive headline offer does not necessarily create a better long-term outcome.

Essence evaluates potential alternatives against the criteria established at the outset.

We consider the financial implications, ownership structure, enterprise value, operating model and transition requirements of each credible alternative.

The evaluation also needs to establish whether the relationship will work in practice. We consider leadership, culture, service responsiveness, investment flexibility, technology, operational support and other capabilities relevant to your clients and team. Meetings with prospective firms provide an opportunity to test those expectations directly.

The objective is to distinguish an appealing proposal from an economically and strategically sound decision.

What We Consider

  • Current versus proposed economics
  • Upfront and recurring financial considerations
  • Ownership and equity implications
  • Tax considerations requiring specialist review
  • Long-term enterprise value
  • Operational and client-service implications
  • Transition costs, risks and constraints
04

Execute

The outcome: Agreed priorities and coordinated next steps if a change is justified.

When you identify a firm that fits, Essence helps you work through the discussions and next steps with the receiving organization.

Our role is to keep your priorities central, help clarify outstanding questions and support coordination between you, the firm and the appropriate specialists.

A successful outcome must make sense for the business and the people behind it.

What We Consider

  • Final economic and structural terms
  • Negotiation priorities
  • Ownership and partner alignment
  • Transition planning
  • Coordination with legal, tax and other specialists
  • Operational continuity
  • Long-term strategic objectives

What the Comparison Needs to Answer

An upfront payment is only one component of a transition's economics. Depending on the alternatives, the comparison may need to address:

  • Retained income after firm charges and operating costs
  • Upfront payments, conditions and repayment obligations
  • Ownership rights, equity terms and liquidity restrictions
  • Partner compensation and succession arrangements
  • The financial effect of different client-retention assumptions
  • Implementation costs, responsibilities and timing

The analysis must reflect the business model involved. An employee team, an independent practice and an RIA owner do not have identical economics or ownership rights.

Scope and Compensation

The scope of Essence's work and its compensation arrangements are disclosed as part of the engagement process. Essence may be compensated by a receiving firm or platform when a transition is completed.

Legal, tax, investment, formal valuation and public accounting advice remain with the appropriate professional specialists.

The Right Decision May Be to Stay.

A transition is not successful simply because it happens.

The measure of success is whether the decision improves the enterprise's economics, capabilities, ownership position or long-term prospects sufficiently to justify its costs and risks.

Essence begins with the decision—not the destination.
